Food Service coordinator

Part Time/Seasonal - Non-benefited – Starting $21.05/hr – Open until May 24, 2017

Position and Duties: 
The Food Service Coordinator is responsible for assisting the Food Service Manager in managing the Food and Beverage operations at Happy Hollow Park and Zoo's Picnic Basket restaurant, on and off site catering, and remote concession stands. General duties include assisting in the hiring, training, supervision and evaluation part-time food service employees; developing and maintaining relationships with work experience program volunteers, developing seasonal food and beverage menus; overseeing food preparation quality and safety; and developing and maintaining an attractive and consistent food presentation.

Other typical duties include:

  • Ensure Happy Hollow guests are provided with quality food & beverage items presented in a professional manner that achieves positive reviews and growing sales 
  • Interact with park guests to identify, develop, and implement menu items that appeal to San Jose's diverse population 
  • Assist in maintaining financial records of fees collected
  • Assist in planning, coordination, and conduct catering for special events, birthday parties and evaluating food service program trends
  • Ensure staff and facilities are compliant with County Health Department standards and that all food safety certifications are maintained
  • Enforce proper food preparation and handling procedures, in compliance with all Health Department and Food Service Department policies regarding sanitation
  • Assist in preparation and servicing of food
  • Create staffing schedules, supervise, and provide direction to kitchen aides, cooks and front line staff.
  • Coordinate and place orders with food and beverage vendors to ensure that a proper level of inventory is maintained
  • Assist in maintaining cashiers with training and best practices for revenue security.

The Food Service Coordinator is part-time un-benefitted, not to exceed 1,040 hours per year. This position is seasonal in nature with most of the hours assigned between March and October. Day, evening, weekend and holiday work will be required in this position. Candidates hired for this position will be required to receive Food Safety Certification within the first three months on the job.

Minimum Qualifications:
1. Education: Successful completion of high school, G.E.D. Certificate, or California Proficiency Certificate

2. Experience: Two years of experience in food service, including one year of cafeteria or food service management experience

3. Acceptable Substitutions: None

Desirable Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have previous experience managing or supervising operations and staff in a high volume, quick serve food service facility and have excellent guest service and communication skills. The candidate must be professional, creative, and energetic, self-motivated, and have the ability to motivate others.

Additionally, the ideal candidate will possess the following competencies, as demonstrated in past and current employment history. Desirable competencies for this position include:

  • Job Expertise - Knowledge of food service standards relating to safety and sanitation with proven ability to apply them in a high volume quick serve facility; ability to track inventory and maintain the food service program budget
  • Supervision - recruits, trains and gives work direction to kitchen staff and volunteers; sets effective long and short-term goals based on a good understanding of management practices; establishes realistic priorities within available resources
  • Coaching - communicates responsibilities, authority, and expectations effectively and provides timely guidance and feedback to help staff accomplish a task or solve a problem
  • Customer Service - demonstrates the ability to anticipate customers' needs and deliver services effectively and efficiently in a timely, accurate, respectful and friendly manner
  • Teamwork Interpersonal Skills - ability to communicate and work effectively with agency personnel, vendors, and Happy Hollow Park & Zoo customers
  • Communication Skills - communicates and listens effectively and responds in an timely, effective, positive and respectful manner; written reports and correspondence are accurate, complete, current; well-organized, legible, concise, neat, and in proper grammatical form
  • Computer Skills - experience with common business computer applications including but not limited to: MS Word, Excel, and Point of Sale systems
  • Availability - Exhibits schedulable hours that are broad and flexible enough to fill multiple shifts within a 7 day week and willing to work holidays
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time, good hearing, vision, and capable of lifting 40lbs
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License and State minimum required insurance
  • Possession of current food safety manager certificate
